truck accident 7 Semi Truck Crashes into Car, 2 Dead in Carver CountyThe second fatal semi truck accident in Minnesota — two days apart. Saturday afternoon a car was stopped on Hwy 212, in Carver County, waiting to turn left onto CR 51, when it was rear-ended by a semi truck. The impact threw the car into the oncoming traffic, broadsiding a pick-up truck.

The driver of the car, Sandra Babatz, 45, of Norwood Young America, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck, Juan Olvera, 35, of Sullivan, Texas, died as he was being transported to Ridgeview Medical Center. There were 4 other occupants in the truck. All four were critically injured and taken to Ridgeview Medical Center, Waconia. They are: Nancy Castillo, 29, Narely Olvera, 9, Andira Olvera, 8, and Galylea, Olvera, 7, all of Bird Island. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Minneapolis Semi Truck Accidents

Very often when someone is rear-ended, the offender was being inattentive — eating, talking on a cellphone, changing the radio station, or even texting. The District of Columbia and 14 states, including Minnesota, have outlawed texting while driving; but it is still the cause of many semi truck accidents. A recent study by Virginia Tech reported that when a person is texting they take their eyes off the road for nearly 5 seconds. At 55 mph, you can travel the length of a football in that amount of time.

Commercial truck drivers are responsible for driving safely and obeying the laws. Trucking companies are responsible for training their drivers, there are strict state and federal regulations they must follow. The requirements include keeping log books, time sheets, and truck maintenance and inspection records.

truck accident 11 Semi Truck / Minivan Accident Leaves 2 Dead in HugoTwo women died and one woman was seriously injured in a semi truck / minivan crash near Hugo, Thursday afternoon. The vehicles were heading north on Hwy 61. The minivan was going to turn left at 159th Street, but had to stop to wait for a break in traffic. The semi truck was not able to avoid crashing into the van, sending it into the ditch.

The driver died at the scene; her aunt was taken to Regions Hospital, where she later died. A third family member is in critical condition at Regions Hospital. The names of the victims have been released. The driver was Carolyn Anderson, 59, of Eagan, Minnesota, the aunt was Rose Bongiovanni, 88, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and the family member that was injured is Marlene Wanner, 72, of Oakdale, Minnesota.

This tragedy is a reminder to all of us about the brevity of life and the dangers of being on the road with semi trucks. This type of collision is most often due to driver error or negligence, which can include texting and driving. Nothing can bring back a family member, but justice can be sought.

There are many companies and people that can be held accountable in a semi truck accident, including the owner of the truck, the owner of the trailer, the owner of the trucking company, the owner of the freight, and the truck driver.

motorcycle accident 5 Motorcycle Crash Hennepin County Leaves 2 DeadTwo people are dead following a head-on collision in western Hennepin County, near Independence. A single motorcycle tried to pass a pick-up truck as they headed east. The motorcycle collided with the lead motorcycle from a group of 5 cyclists heading west for a multi-state road trip. One motorcycle caught on fire and a 1-mile stretch of County Road 6 was closed for about 4 hours. Both motorcycle drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The lead motorcyclist was identified as Mike Brown, 65, of Long Lake. He was wearing a helmet. Brown, recently retired, served as a Long Lake firefighter for 45 years. At various times, Brown served as chief, assistant chief, captain, and lieutenant.

The collision occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. southwest of Maple Plain. The five motorcycles were heading west, when the eastbound lone motorcyclist, who by eyewitness reports had been driving aggressively prior to the crash, decided to pass the truck and moved into the oncoming lane, according to a representative of the County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the lone motorcycle has not been identified. The State Patrol is on the scene to reconstruct and investigate the crash.

Minneapolis Fireworks Dangers and Safety Tips

Written By: TSR Injury Law | Published On: 3rd July 2009 | Category: Articles | RSS Feed

fireworks 1 Minneapolis Fireworks Dangers and Safety TipsFireworks pose a problem every July 4th. St. Paul police Sgt. Paul Schnell has reported that his department is inundated with fireworks emergency calls every year for this holiday.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety holds a demonstration each year, with creative exhibits, to stress the possible negative consequences of mishandling fireworks. This year they dressed a toddler-sized mannequin in a festive outfit, had the mannequin standing over what appeared to be a dud firecracker. Needless to say, the firecracker exploded in the mannequins face, engulfing it in flames.

The demonstration should be a deterrent — it is not. Personal injuries increase every year, especially since 2002 when a new law went into effect legalizing the sale and use of some fireworks in Minnesota. Dr. Douglas Brunette, HCMC medical director, was quoted in the Minneapolis Star Tribune article by Alex Ebert as saying, “On a personal level, it’s very difficult to take care of these patients. Many of them are young children. [The injuries] can result in permanent disabilities and permanent disfigurement.”

Minneapolis Personal Injury Attorney Offers Safety Tips

If you have to do personal fireworks, follow these safety precautions — they won’t guarantee a safe 4th of July, but hopefully a safer one:

  • light one item at a time
  • don’t ever re-light a dud
  • keep a water source close at hand to extinguish any stray sparks
  • do not light fireworks near dry grass, etc
  • use only Minnesota legal fireworks (by law nothing that flies in the air or explodes)
  • wear shoes
  • do not wear hats (fire hazard)
  • pull long hair back (fire hazard)

The safer choice is to go to a public display. Here are two sites that list local schedules.
