Anisocoria Eye Injuries
Air bag explosions cause three main types of injury:
- concussion – causing varying degrees of brain damage
- tinnitus – ringing in the ears
- anisocoria – difference in pupil sizes
When the head or eye area suffers a blunt trauma, the trauma can tear the pupil sphincter causing a permanently dilated pupil, termed anisocoria. This condition has become much more common since air bags have become standard in cars and trucks. Right after the accident, anisocoria may appear as retina damage or possibly sudden vision loss. The vision will usually completely return within 4-6 weeks, but the dilated pupil will be a permanent disfigurement.
Anisocoria Diagnosis
A neurological examination is necessary after sustaining a blunt force trauma to the head, as in an air bag deployment. The explosion can snap the head back and cause many different injuries — all of them having the possibility of being permanent and very serious. The neurological exam should include checking the corneal reflex and manual palpation of the eyeball. A cranial computed tomography (CT) scan is also helpful in diagnosing the extent of the injury.
