Bell’s palsy is a condition that causes weakness and unilateral facial paralysis as a result of trauma to the 7th cranial nerve. The paralysis can cause drooping of facial features. It can also interfere with function of the mouth and throat.
Bell’s Palsy progresses very quickly. It can start in the morning with a dry eye or tingling around the lips; by evening, it can be a full-blown case of Bell’s Palsy with drooping, numbness, and facial paralysis. In about half of the cases the nerve will regenerate within a few months, but in some cases the paralysis can last 18 months. In rare cases it never clears up. Whether the paralysis is mild or severe, there is considerable discomfort, frustration, and self-consciousness. Because this injury is so personal and obvious, it can lead to issues with depression.
The type of injury that can trigger Bell’s Palsy, is an injury to the head or neck sustained in a car accident or truck accident. A hard blow or severe jerk may lead to inflammation and swelling of the seventh cranial nerve.
One problem that may develop as the nerve regenerates is that the nerve fibers may not reconnect to the same muscle, resulting in an electrical signal to the brain contracting the wrong muscle. This is called synkinesis. Synkinesis may lead to a dangerous situation. The eye could suffer significant injury if the eyelid does not close due to synkinesis.
