BPPV is also referred to as ear crystals or ear rocks. It is a debilitating vertigo condition that occurs when ear crystals, made of calcium carbonate, become dislodged.
The crystals are called otoconia. They function as a miniature positioning system that sends transmissions to the brain when the head is moved. Those transmissions inform the brain as to the position of the body. When the ear crystals are dislodged, they move around in the canal and the brain thinks the head is moving more than it is — resulting in vertigo. BPPV can occur after sustaining a head injury in a motor vehicle accident.
Often BPPV is described as a temporary, minor condition; but anyone who has had BPPV will tell you that it is debilitating. Many routine activities becomes difficult: sleeping, standing, walking, and driving. Frequently, BPPV sufferers develop agorophobia because they are afraid of injuring themselves or others.
BPPV Symptoms
BPPV symptoms fluctuate depending on the position of the head. Each BPPV episode lasts between one-half minute to two minutes. The frequency can vary according to the number and size of the crystals and the person’s sensitivity to the displacement. The symptoms of BPPV include:
- dizziness
- lightheadedness
- unsteadiness
- loss of balance
- vertigo (sense of spinning or moving)
- blurred vision
- nystagmus (eyes rotate toward affected ear)
- light sensitivity
- nausea (sporadic to constant)
- vomiting
Some people choose to take anti-vertigo medications and some people choose to wait it out — hoping the crystals will go back into position or dissolve. Still other people go through the process of canalith repositioning with the Epley maneuver. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended.
