Minneapolis Broken Ankle Lawyer
A broken ankle is one of the most common types of fractures, but there is nothing routine about it. The more bones broken in the ankle the more unstable the ankle is and the more difficulty in healing properly. A broken ankle that does not heal properly can cause lifelong problems. An ankle may be broken due to negligence on the part of another in a motor vehicle accident or a slip and fall accident.
If you have sustained a broken ankle in an accident that was not your fault, contact a Minneapolis Broken Ankle Lawyer at 612-362-0000. Our attorneys are compassionate, skilled litigators with years of experience. We will work for justice in your case.
About Broken Ankles
The ankle joint is the point where 3 bones come together. The joint is stabilized by 3 groups of ligaments. Very often ligament tears (soft tissue injuries) accompany a broken ankle injury. The bones that make up the ankle joint are:
- tibia – the main, weight-bearing bone of the lower leg
- fibula – the smaller bone of the lower leg
- talus – the bone between the heel bone and the fibula and tibia
A broken ankle can range from small cracks to shattering breaks that pierce the skin. Again, the more bones broken:
- the more unstable the ankle is
- the longer it takes the ankle to heal
- the more difficult it is for the ankle to heal in proper alignment
Treatment of a Broken Ankle
It is important to minimize swelling of a broken ankle by keeping the foot elevated and through the use of ice packs. Reduced swelling will result in reduced pain and damage to surrounding tissue.
X-rays are usually taken to determine the exact location and severity of the broken ankle. Then a splint will be put on to limit mobility and give time for the swelling to abate. Once the swelling has gone down, the ankle bones can be aligned.
With a simple break, the ankle bones can be moved back into position. A severe break may require surgery to achieve a good alignment. This is accomplished with the use of wires, rods, or plates and screws.
After the broken ankle has been realigned, a cast will be used to further stabilize the ankle and ensure proper healing. Maintaining alignment is critical to the future health of the ankle. If the ankle heals misaligned, it can lead to chronic pain, arthritis, and potentially a frozen joint.
