Ligaments are tough, fibrous bands that limit joint motion. There are four ligaments critical to the stability of the knee:
- the medial collateral ligament (MCL)
- the lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
- the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
- the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
The MCL extends from the end of the femur to the top of the tibia, on the inside of the knee joint, preventing the lower leg from bending outward. A traumatic injury to the MCL frequently includes an ACL tear or a meniscus tear. MCL tears are classified in three categories. They are:
- Grade 1 MCL Tear is an incomplete tear, with minor pain, the knee joint is stable, with a quick recovery
- Grade 2 MCL Tear is also an incomplete tear, with pain and swelling, the knee feels unstable at times, moderate recovery time
- Grade 3 MCL Tear is a complete tear, significant pain and swelling, the knee is unstable and difficult to bend, long recovery time
MCL Tear Treatment
Initial treatment for a MCL Tear is rest, ice packs, and anti-inflammatory medication. With a Grade 3 tear, an immobilizer or a hinged knee brace provide support and comfort, although the patient should stay off of the leg for 7-10 days. ROM exercises are important to start immediately with all three grades of tears.
Surgery is seldom recommended for MCL tears. Insurance companies tend to interpret that as never recommended and attempt to deny those charges, even if a doctor has performed surgery on a MCL tear. In those situations, it is vital to have legal representation to secure payment for all of the medical expenses incurred.
