Minneapolis Motorcycle Crash Lawyer

Motorcycle CrashMotorcycles have a right to be on the road – but what is the advantage of being “dead right”? Drive defensively and stay alive.

Statistics can be skewed to reinforce every opinion. The bottom line is that if a motorcycle is in an accident, the motorcyclist is more apt to be seriously injured than a person in a passenger vehicle. Two Basic Types of Motorcycle Crashes

There are two major categories for motorcycle crashes:

  • Accidents caused when another motorist invades the motorcyclist’s right of way.
  • Accidents where the rider’s inexperience was evident – improper steering in curves or improper use of brakes.

Stay Safe on Your Motorcycle

Motorcycles account for about 3% of all vehicles on the road, but 10% of the fatalities. Nearly half of the accidents occur in the daytime – and at an intersection. They should be very visible in this situation. Yet, people still have trouble seeing motorcycles and acknowledging their right to be on the road.

If you want to stay safe as a motorcyclist, you will have to be vigilant.

  • First, if you are an inexperienced rider; take a training course or have a knowledgeable friend teach you how to maneuver your motorcycle. Many of the accidents are caused by lack of experience and know-how in handling, maneuvering, and braking the motorcycle.
  • Drive defensively. That is, try to anticipate what the “other guy” is going to do.
  • Drive courteously. This one is sometimes hard to swallow, but if the driver of a passenger vehicle develops “road rage” toward you; you will most likely be the loser.
  • Drive with your headlight on and in the left part of your lane. It will help you be more visible.
  • Wear proper attire. It is highly recommended to wear leather chaps, leather boots, long-sleeved shirt (if not a jacket), and a helmet. If your skin is covered and your head protected, you can lay the bike down and still walk away in one piece.
  • Do not speed – at least in traffic areas. If you have to open it up, wait until you get away from the city and on a long stretch of straight road. Ideally, it should be a road you know and know the condition of the pavement. Potholes and debris on the road are very hazardous to motorcyclists and lead to many of the single-vehicle motorcycle accidents.
