About Radiofrequency Neurotomy
Radiofrequency neurotomy (RFN) is a treatment used to temporarily alleviate pain from a facet joint injury, usually sustained during a motor vehicle accident. Facet joints are the small joints that connect the vertebral bodies to each other. RFN uses a heated probe to burn the medial nerves from the facet joints. This disrupts the pain signals the nerve normally sends from the facet joint to the brain. Because RFN is a relatively invasive and expensive procedure, it will not be pursued unless the patient has failed conservative treatment measures.
The doctor uses x-ray guidance to insert the needle parallel to and against the targeted nerve. An intermittent electrical current is delivered with the intention of killing the nerve, interrupting the pain signals to the brain.
With all medical procedures, there are risks and potential complications. Possible radiofrequency neurotomy complications are pain and numbness at the injection site, infection, or permanent nerve damage.
