Two people are dead following a head-on collision in western Hennepin County, near Independence. A single motorcycle tried to pass a pick-up truck as they headed east. The motorcycle collided with the lead motorcycle from a group of 5 cyclists heading west for a multi-state road trip. One motorcycle caught on fire and a 1-mile stretch of County Road 6 was closed for about 4 hours. Both motorcycle drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The lead motorcyclist was identified as Mike Brown, 65, of Long Lake. He was wearing a helmet. Brown, recently retired, served as a Long Lake firefighter for 45 years. At various times, Brown served as chief, assistant chief, captain, and lieutenant.
The collision occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. southwest of Maple Plain. The five motorcycles were heading west, when the eastbound lone motorcyclist, who by eyewitness reports had been driving aggressively prior to the crash, decided to pass the truck and moved into the oncoming lane, according to a representative of the County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the lone motorcycle has not been identified. The State Patrol is on the scene to reconstruct and investigate the crash.
